The Dayton Wright is a refined version of the DW-535 that is designed to be used between a low-output moving coil type cartridge and a conventional preamplifier. It thus takes the place of a step-up transformer, eliminating the distortions present in a transformer, and providing vastly improved transient response and definition.
It will operate with input loads as low as 10 ohms, or as high as 4k7. The load impedance is altered by changing load resistors within the unit.
This unit is equipped both with conventional phono jacks on input and output, and BNC type input connectors.
Unlike many pre-preamplifiers, the DW 536 operates on 120 Volts 50-60 Hz Power lines. The power transformer is located in a remote case to minimize hum pickup. This unit has a rectifier and preliminary filtering in the remote supply, thus no power supply AC goes into the main case itself. There is one stage of Zener stabilization, and two stages of voltage regulation using bypassed voltage standards for lowest power supply noise.
The main circuit consists of several parallel cascode stages using selected low-noise PNP transistors; in a Fowler-Wright configuration for very low Early Distortion. Loaded with a current sink, these feed a bootstrapped voltage amplifier stage followed by a split load emitter follower. This classic circuit has been refined so that no other unit outperforms it.
The unit
has a gain of 37 dB, reasonable open loop bandwidth, and good RF rejection.
